Max Boyce heading for Grand Pavilion during tour of Wales

-

LEGENDARY Welsh entertainer Max Boyce has announced he’s to hit the road again for another tour – including a date in Porthcawl in February.

The legendary singer and comic is to play a string of gigs across the country early next year – only his second spate of live appearances since undergoing quadruple bypass surgery in 2014.

The 73-year-old will embark on a tour of Wales, including The Grand Pavilion on Friday, February 10.

The singer’s heart condition was famously diagnosed by rugby icon JPR Williams on the touch line at a Glynneath RFC match – before going under the knife of a South African surgeon on the same day Wales played the Springboks.

“It was during that match against Bridgend that I had my worst attack of all so far,” he said.

“It was so bad they had to get a medic to me – JPR Williams and his wife, who are both doctors and were at the game, came over to check me out.

“From there I was re- ferred to see a cardiac specialist at the Spire Hospital in Cardiff and they gave me an angiogram, pumping dye into my blood to see if there was any clogging or narrowing of my arteries taking place.

“And, straight away, they could see there was lots wrong and I needed bypass work.

“They said there wasn’t any rush and that I wasn’t in any immediate danger, but then added, ‘Or we could do it next Friday’ – that’s when it all became scarily real.

“But I told them straight – there’s no way I’m having an operation on Friday 13th, so they waited until the next morning.

“But that still didn’t stop me getting a South African surgeon to carry out the procedure – and on the day Wales took on the Springboks in Durban too.

“Honestly, you could not make it up.”
