CORNELLY Striders are again staging the Prince of Wales New Year’s Day Fun Run, writes Tony Poole.

For those still standing after the night before, a new four-mile course will take competitor­s along country lanes.

The event is centred around the Prince of Wales public house in Kenfig with competitor­s coming under starter’s orders at 11am.

The entry fee that is payable on the day is £5 and it includes hot soup for all entrants.

Changing facilities and toilets are also available.

Meanwhile, Jack O’Brien (Bridgend) stormed to victory last Sunday in the Junior Christmas Jumper 2k Parkrun in Newbridge Fields.

His winning time was 8mins 2secs and just 18 seconds back came Ioan Phillips in a personal best 8:20.

Dylan Jones claimed third spot in 8:55 while top female and fourth-placed Abigail Morgan clocked a personal best 8:56.

Fifth-placed Joshua Morgan (Bridgend) completed the course in 8:57 with Daniel Perriman and Nancy McAllister recording identical personal best times of 9:01.

Eighth-placed Bethan Anthony (Bridgend) clocked 9:28; Mia Allen (Bridgend) registered 9:40 and Phoebe Brien 9:41.

There were 17 other personal bests in a field of 78 starters, and they came from Henry Willsher, Joshua James Crump, Benjamin Davies, Isobel Macintyre, Vincent Borg, Dylan Smith, Katie Jeannette, Annabelle Watts, Osian Phillips, Jemima Dutton, Lily May Sheppard, Cohen Wallis, Maya Petter, Lily May Crump, Jenny Payne, Summer Marie Moore and Samuel Davies.

The previous week, 59 junior competitor­s faced the starter for the weekly 2k run.

Tom Attwood (Bridgend) won the event in a personal best time of 7mins 37secs from Ioan Phillips 8:35.

Joshua Morgan (Bridgend) was third in 8:52; Xavier Thomas recorded 9:06 and first female finisher Nancy McAllister completed the course in 9:14.

The other top-10 placings came from Daniel Perriman 9:23, Matthew Bridges 9:27, Abigail Morgan 9:31, David Attwood 9:31 and Phoebe Brien 9:40.

Seven other personal best times were registered, and they came from Tanisha Allin, Vincent Borg, Benjamin Davies, Eloise Neenan, Miles Thomas, Lucas Povey and Halle Scarlett Goss.

Ultra half-marathon bands were also awarded on the day.
