CARDIFF MET UNIV .... 4 PENYBONT .................... 3

PENYBONT were beaten for a first time this season in the Friendly Cup (South) competition, going down to Cardiff Metropolitan University during this magnificent seven-goal thriller at Cyncoed, writes Tony Poole.

Bont opened the group stage of their cup campaign with a 4-3 win at Risca United, and went on to gain a notable 1-0 home victory over high-flying Cambrian & Clydach.

But they were never ahead against the Students, who had the lead after just five minutes when John Littlemore drove the ball past Jonny Davies in the Bont goal.

The response, however, from the Bridgend super club was good with Adam Carpenter chiselling an equaliser on the end of a Joshua Jones assist.

Back came the Students, who won a 42nd-minute penalty that Joshua Barnett duly despatched.

The real watershed moment then arrived when a second Littlemore strike sent the Students into the break with a chunky 3-1 lead.

However, the goal of the game in the 50th minute was down to Carpenter, who drilled a shot from on halfway past goalkeeper Tommy Welch who was spotted off his goal-line.

But the studious Students had learned their lesson, and a text-book build up led to Callum Jones conceding an owngoal.

However, the Bridgend super club refused to give up the ghost, and dancing Danny Woolfenden led the Students a merry dance.

He waltzed past a few defenders before setting up his former Llangynwyd Rangers chum Thomas Davies to make it 4-3.

But that’s as good as it got on the night for Bont, who during final knockings failed to muster another equaliser.

The next Welsh Premiership Development involvement for Penybont is on January 8 when they welcome Haverfordwest County to The Kymco Stadium for a league fixture.
