PORTHCAWL ............... 14 GLYNCORRWG .............. 5

ANY notions that may have existed, of top of the table Porthcawl doling out a New Year thumping to bottom club Glyncorrwg, were quickly dispelled as the visitors put up a strong show that made nonsense of their current league standing.

From the outset ’Corrwg set about disrupting Porthcawl efforts to play running rugby as their ferocious tackling made a proper game of it.

As a result, it took fully 25 minutes for the Seaweeds to register the first points with scrum-half Ross Parsons being instrumental in it.

His smart charge down of a Glyncorrwg clearing kick saw second row Leon McNally hack the loose ball through and win the race for the touchdown.

White’s simple conversion made it 7-0.

From a well taken lineout the next score came. Skipper Richard Hnyda took the ball cleanly and his pack got in behind to drive him home for the try.

White’s again converted to make it 14-0 at half time.

The visitors enjoyed the better of the first quarter of the second half and were bolstered by the experience of lock Steve Lewis as well as the im- pressive Gareth Kingman at full-back, both coming off the bench. As the Glyncorrwg scrum improved, it was Kingman who took advantage by making several forays into Porthcawl territory with some strong running.

A sustained period of pressure in the home 22, saw Kingman get his reward with a deserved but unconverted try.

However, Porthcawl’s defensive display found another level and despite the endeavours of the visitors, Porthcawl held out for the win wwhich puts them 10 points clear at the head of the table. The Seaweeds will seek another double on Saturday when Bryncethin visit South Road.
