Emphatic six-try win for Tondu against Celtic
TONDU ......................... 36 MAESTEG CELTIC ........ 9
AN emphatic win for Tondu in the end but only after Celtic had deprived them of the ball for the opening 20 minutes, writes Mike Sully.
A great run by left winger David Povey saw the ball moved inside and a barn storming run from second row and captain Hywel Davies saw him grab the game’s first try, Josh Tatchell adding the conversion to cancel out an early penalty from Celtic full back Tom Hancock.
That was followed by a stunning run from centre Matthew Davies who offloaded to right winger Sam “Smiler” Grabham to sail over in the corner, Hancock slotted a second penalty for the visitors to make it 12-6 at the break.
The second period started with another spectacular break from Matthew Davies who put full back Aled Jones clear to score the home side’s third try.
Hancock then kicked another penalty for Celtic before Tondu opened the flood gates.
A nice bit of trickery from scrum half Gareth Lindenburn brought the bonus point try midway through the half with Tatchell adding the conversion.
Tondu’s fifth came a few minutes later when out- side half Paul Smithson put flanker Jon Penpraze in near the posts.
It was now just a matter of how many Tondu would score and their sixth and final try was left to the prolific Sam Grabham.
Captain Hywel Davies said: “The defence was outstanding today which laid the platform for us to play some good rugby. Celtic made us work hard to get the bonus point win.”
Tondu move to the top of the table with Ystradgynlais’s game falling foul of the weather.
