Do you remember: Thank you to everyone who got in touch to provide more information about The Crown Inn which was situated near my cottage on Crown Road.

Griffith Howell was the Landlord between 18611881 and his great greatgranddaughter informed me that there was a short report about him, in the Glamorgan Gazette, 30th April 1869 edition.

He was apparently ‘summoned for having his house open for the sale of beer at prohibited hours the previous Sunday’.

A neighbour also tells me that her father converted the inn into a house and smallholding having bought it from an actress and singer whose name was Fortescue. She and her actor friends would entertain the village with musical theatre performances in the inn. I have found some information about an actress from the Victorian era called May Fortescue who passed away in London in 1950. Could she be the actress who owned The Crown Inn? Fascinating.

Our fabulous community has such a wonderful history it would be such a shame if it was lost. If you have any memories that you want to share please email me at the address above. It would be lovely to share them from time to time.
