‘Adopt’ part of river for Great Taff Tidy

-

KEEP Wales Tidy is calling for volunteers to get involved in The Great Taff Tidy and help care for the river – the jewel in the capital’s crown.

The Great Taff Tidy, sponsored by Redrow Homes, will take place from February 17 to 19.

With only a month to go, the search is on for community groups, businesses, residents, fishing clubs, rowers and canoe enthusiasts to come forward and “adopt” a stretch of the River Taff to clean up during the weekend of action.

The campaign is being backed by BBC presenter, writer and Cardiff resident Will Millard.

He said: “The River Taff has been transformed since the days of heavy industry which has allowed fish, plants and wildlife to thrive.

“However, we can’t take this for granted – increasing litter in the river and along its banks presents a real danger to aquatic life, not to mention detracting from the river’s beauty.

“It’s incredibly important that we act now to care for our river and I’m proud to be supporting The Great Taff Tidy.”

Beverley Wookey, sales director at Redrow Homes South Wales, said: “At Redrow we’re passionate about protecting the environment for future generations.

“The River Taff is an integral part of the landscape of South Wales and is vital to wildlife and recreational activities in the area, so making sure that the river stays clean and safe for everyone who uses it is incredibly important.

“We are therefore proud to be sponsoring and taking part in the Great Taff Tidy 2017.”

Keep Wales Tidy and Redrow are urging everyone in Cardiff who enjoys walking or cycling along the Taff, or those who fish, row or canoe on its waters, to get involved by registering an event.

Gareth Davies, project officer for Keep Wales Tidy, said: “It’s vital that we all do our bit to look after our local environment so I am delighted that people across Cardiff are coming together to care for the River Taff.

“Keep Wales Tidy would like to thank Redrow Homes for their support – The Great Taff Tidy 2017 would not be possible without them.”

Organisations which have already signed up include Glamorgan Cricket, Cardiff council, Cardiff Rivers Group, Llandaff Rowing Club, ACT Training, Friends of Hailey Park, Cardiff Tidy Taffs, Cardiff Metropolitan University and Green Days – Innovate Trust.
