Coed Y Mwstwr IT was “Back to the Future” last week at Coed-yMwstwr, as David (Maesteg) Thomas relived his glorious past in winning the fourth Senior Stableford competitio­n of 2017.

No stranger to the victory rostrum during his pomp, the famous son of the Old Parish had recently been knocking on the door.

Third-place finishes in an August Stableford and the festive season Turkey Trot tournament served notice that he still had it in him to go low.

Ultimately, he built victory around a terrific Tutu with birdie putts sunk in dynamic fashion on the fourth and penultimat­e holes.

Equally important was a superb par on the tricky seventh hole while he accumulate­d points on every hole.

The competitio­n attracted 52 competitor­s and runner-up Glyn Jackman, who collected 39 points, rued a blob on the par-three eighth hole.

Third-placed John Rogers recorded six pars on a 38-point card –and the tournament produced another Tutu man.

Jimmy Blackball registered his double two on the 11 th and 17 th holes, and it led to him entering the clubhouse with 37 points.

Irish star Philip Harrington also hit the 37-point mark, and he sunk a putt for two on the 11 th green.

Sixth-placed Eifion Evans also hit 37 points with par achieved by David Holloway and Peter Ashman.

Six players all got 35 points – Dave Roderick, Jonny McEachen, Philip Weston, putting genius Michael Joyce, steady Eddie D Taylor and Richard T Commander.

Other twos on the day came from left-hand magician David Griffiths, Clive Dyke, captain David B Ford-Williams and William Jones.

Meanwhile, after last week’s Senior Stableford event, Richard T Commander remains in command of the Senior Section Eclectic via 63-657.

And he’s being chased for fewest strokes on each hole by Michael Paddick 70-12- 58, Mark Raybould 66-8- 58, Trevor Duggan 66-8- 58, Jimmy Blackball 69-11- 58, Clive Dyke 66-7-59, Andrew Cox 699- 60, Byron Cox 67-7- 60 and John Rogers 69-9- 60.

Meanwhile, Coed-yMwstwr has announced that Sammy Slennett is the new club captain.

He takes over at the Bryn Road helm from Huw Rodgers with Stephen Morgan this year’s vice-captain.

Last Saturday, Coedy- Mwstwr staged a Team Stableford event that was won on 122 points by Daniel Jenkins, Kirk Norris, Jonny Witts and Stephen Witts.

The best three scores on every hole counted, and it was hats off to Colin Edwards, Geoffrey Jones, Kevin Barry Speight and David B Ford-Williams for securing runner-up honours with 120 points.

A further two points back came Simon McCutcheon, Rory O’Connell, Steve O’Connell and Stephen Thomas.

Two teams then scored 117 points – Lee Griffiths, Raymond Hapgood, Joseph Kelly and new captain Sammy Slennett along with Glenn James, Alex North, Jimmy North and Kevin J Parry.

Grove GORDON Lyle claimed a sweet victory in the 14 th staging of the winter-long Order of Merit that will bring competitor­s back to the Grove in the spring.

His winning score was 37 Stableford points and he finished one point in front of both Steve Knight and Alan Walters.

Fourth-placed Gareth Carter-Clare along with Kenneth Bale and Steve Cole all fired 35 points.

The event produced three counts of two, and they were on the cards of Scott Corbett, Michael Jones and Steve Knight.

Grove Senior Section last week contested the Frank Say Trophy and the winners of the Yellow Devil were Edward Channell, Terry Emlyn-Jones and Michael Lees. They ran up a winning score of 136 Stableford points, and had two points in hand over Tony Foyle, Dave Howells and Gwyn Parkhouse.

Yesterday (Tuesday), Grove Seniors were hoping to stage a Stableford Balls competitio­n.

Lakeside ANDREW Colquhoun hit the heights last week in taking the ninth leg of the winter-long Senior Section Winter Stableford event at the Lakeside club in Margam.

A winning score of 39 points was down to eight pars - and he could even afford a no-return on the third hole.

Two points back came Wyn Richards who entered a magnificen­t seven pars on 37-point card that contained a blob on the sixth hole.

Putting genius Bob Lind ran up a par score of 36 points, shooting a birdie on seven only to blob the next hole.

Fourth-placed Roger Griffiths entered the member’s snug with 34 points to finish one point in front of four players – Peter Wooster, Bob Thomas, Bob Hazzard and John Parry.

The 31-point mark has hit by top cricket umpire Peter Watkins, Brian Channell, Derek Pitt and Dave Burridge.

But once again pop star Cliff Richards had a miss with a 27-point recording well outside the top 10.
