Weather hits games

-

FC PORTHCAWL and their Port Talbot League Premier Division title rivals were all hit by wet weather last weekend, writes Tony Poole.

Nothing moved last Saturday and going into the business end of the season, The Green Machine hold an eightpoint advantage over Cwmavon, who have two games in hand.

It’s now looking unlikely that former Welsh League club Tata Steel will feature in the championship race.

To make matters worse, Porthcawl are without a game this weekend, and will focus on warm weather training in Rest Bay.

Next up is a League Open Cup-tie at Abercregan on February 11 followed seven days later by the big one – a probable title decider at Rest Bay with reigning champions Cwmavon.

However, off the pitch the Green Machine are riding the crest of a wave with the arrival of champion surfer Brad Hockridge. He’s joined the management team and committee, working alongside David Owen, Matt Bowden and Jon McCarthy.

Hockridge had foot- ball trials with Cardiff City, and is a successful businessman via Double Overhead and AXL Distribution.

He said: “I’ve linked with FC Porthcawl, as I’m impressed with the camaraderie among the players and excited by the vision of the management team.

“They possess an incredible will to win, and I’m committed to lending support.”

Social events are also part of the Porthcawl scene and this Friday they are staging a race night in the Ancient Briton Inn.

And on March 18, some excellent prizes are on offer in a raffle during a Charity Event that is backing good causes. One of them is the daughter of club player Hywel Roberts with little Ellie battling a type of brain cancer. Some heads will be shaved on the night courtesy of another club player and backer, Elliot Mills, who owns Barber Shop No 5.

More exciting news will break shortly with FC Porthcawl at the heart of plans to resurrect an event that was synonymous with the seaside town.
