Fourth win in a row makes it a perfect January for Athletic

-

BRIDGEND Athletic 2nd XV made it a perfect January with their fourth consecutive victory.

On this occasion they claimed the scalp of Premiership Bargoed’s 2nd XV in a narrow 7-5 victory at Newbridge Fields.

The Athletic with good ball carrying by locks Jamie Doherty and Aled Piliner and a dynamic display by the back row of Aaron Mordecai, Luke Williams and Geraint Lang ensured the backs saw plenty of first half possession.

Having squandered four potential try scoring opportunities from within the Bargoed 22 they at last broke the deadlock.

The ball was moved wide to wing Josh Seldon who made good ground before passing inside to centre Chris Price.

Price beat two defenders before putting the supporting full back Sam Richards over wide out. Outside half Scott Jones converted to give the Athletic a 7-0 half time lead,

The second half saw a reversal of fortunes as Bargoed took control up front.

They reduced the deficit to 7-5 and went all out for the winning score. Excellent defence with man of the match hooker Cameron Thomas showing up everywhere in the tight and loose, prevented the visitors turning possession into points and enabled the Athletic to claim a significant victory.

All six substitutes played their part.

Four youth players who have all played in the 1st XV this season featured in this win as did three in the 1st XV win at Cwmllynfell, which augurs well for the Athletics’ future at senior level.

This coming Saturday the Ath 2nd XV look to make it 5 wins out of 5 in 2017 when they visit their Llanharan counterparts for a Mid Glamorgan Premier League fixture.
