Anglers net £1,886 to help RNLI appeal
FISHING off both boats and the shore, a group of keen sea anglers know that one day they may have to call on the RNLI.
So they came together to raise £1,886 for the volunteer lifeboat crew in Porthcawl to help them continue their lifesaving work.
“You never know when you may need to call out these heroes,” said Clive Dowsett and Mark Jones, who help to run the Taffy Anglers.
The Beddau-based club formed in December 2013 and, after raising cash for charity last year, they decided they wanted to do more and set a target of £1,000.
With the knowledge that the RNLI is facing increasing running costs, they held meetings to decide how they could help.
A sponsored Santa day was held in December with bucket collections carried out along the seafront in Porthcawl.
Sponsor forms were also given to friends, family and workplaces, with some of the members attending rugby matches and local stores.
Jennifer Llewellyn, a club member’s mum, also held fundraising coffee mornings throughout the year.
The Taffy Anglers, including some younger members, paid a special visit to the RNLI lifeboat station in Porthcawl to hand over the money.
Clive and Mark said: “We have a close knit group of mates all living in the same village.
“We fish off both boat and shore and understand the importance of supporting the RNLI, as it could be any one of us who potentially could end up in trouble whilst out on the coast or off shore on one of the many charter boats we use from Penarth around to Milford Haven.
“The fact the guys all wanted to raise money makes us very proud of the achievement and spurs us on to do more.”
