Lions’ club night of murder and mystery was a roaring success

-

ALL who attended Bridgend Lions’ Club Murder Mystery evening at Westward Community Centre last Friday evening agreed it was a roaring success, writes Carol Thomas.

The centre was transformed with a superb decorated stage of dragons, lanterns and white poppies, beautifully laid purple lace table settings and a ‘light’ buffet which was not ‘light’ at all (but plentiful) was enjoyed in the interval.

The murder was set in The White Poppy Club in Shanghi in the 1930s when gang warfare was frequent and brutal. The owner Fu Manchuria had been stabbed through the heart with a chopstick, and a motley collection of guests at the club were the suspects.

The cast consisted of: WanTon Wiily – Dave Newton; Su Suki – Pat Newton; Bruce Lie – Brian Davies; the Rev Spooner – Patrick Halliwell; Xena Spooner – Biddy Halliwell; Lady Marmalade – Geraldine Rees; Mousey Tung – Jenny Morgan; Detective, Marlow McClue Henry Trimlett; Organiser/narrator – Val Trimlett. Jenny and Brian are members of All Saints Church Penyfai and the remainder of the cast are members of Bridgend Lions’ Club and/or partners.

The killer turned out to be the Revd Al Spooner and the winning team was “The Sweeny” (all 19 tables were given a detective’s name). The team leader Beryl Duggan was presented with the winners’ plaque by president John Paton.

Audience participation was excellent and thanks are sent to all who helped to make a truly enjoyable event. –
