Book Sale: The secondhand Book Sale held in Gilead Chapel, Spencer Road Coity will take place on Saturday, February 25, from 10am12noon.

Glamorgan Family History Society: Bridgend Branch of the Glamorgan Family History Society will meet at the Len Evans Centre, Aberkenfig on Monday, February 20. The speaker will be Don Llewellyn who will give members a talk on the subject of The Brains Behind The Mob.

Coastal Path Walk: Members and Friends of Soroptimis­t Internatio­nal, Bridgend, are planning to walk along the Coastal Path on Porthcawl on Saturday March 11, starting at 10am, to celebrate Internatio­nal Women’s Day.

The ladies are inviting other ladies/groups and girls from the area to join them. They plan to walk from Coney Beach, Porthcawl to Rest Bay and points of interest on the way along the promenade and path and perhaps with refreshmen­ts at a venue to be decided, depending on numbers.

St John’s House Concert: The Annual Concert for St John’s House (Hospice) Newcastle Hill will take place in the Catholic Church, Ewenny Road.

The Friends of the House have organised the concert for Friday, March 17 at 7pm.

Bridgend Male Choir along with ladies choir Vocelle and the children’s choir from Oldcastle School will perform. Entry is £6.

Wartime Evacuees: Bridgend Lions Henry informs me that he has discovered that 110,000 children were evacuated to Wales with the largest contingent (33,000) coming to Glamorgan.

This is an important element of the social history of WWII which Bridgend Lions would like to explore.

Bridgend Lions would be most grateful therefore, for any details that any persons in the Bridgend and district area can provide relating to Evacuees.

Bridgend Townwomen’s Guild: The guild meet on the second Wednesday of each month in Hope Baptist Church Institute, Derwen road at 2pm.

They have a talk or other forms of entertainm­ent and end the afternoon with tea and biscuits. There is also annual trips and several half day trips to places of interest.

Step Back In Time: On Saturday, June 10, Bridgend will step back in time to WWII.

The town centre will be transforme­d back to the 1940s with demonstrat­ions, period games and activities that were common during the war years, from 10am5pm.

Quiz Night: The annual Quiz for Christian Aid will be held at 7pm on Thursday February 23 in Nolton Hall. Entrance is £3 per person with a prize for the winning team.

Hospital Service: On Friday, February 24, Jeff Dyas, from Barry, will be leading the next Hospital Christian Fellowship Service at the Hospital Chapel of the Princess of Wales Hospital, Coity Road, at 3pm.

Also the service is broadcast to the wards over the hospital radio.

The Ladies Guild: The guild meets at Bridgend United Church, Tondu Road, February 28 for a fun evening with a Pancake and Performanc­e Night. The fun starts at 7.15pm.

Thursdays there is a Baby and Toddler Group at 9.30am held in the School Room, Station Hill. Sunday’s Cool (Sunday school) is held at 10am and services are held, morning service at 10.30am and evening at 6pm.

Bridgend Male Choir: Five choristers from Bridgend Male Choir were presented with life membership certificat­es by choir presidentP­aul Porter at the choir’s recent Annual General Meeting.

The five ‘Lifers’ who achieved more than 40 years service with the choir were Alan Roberts Jones, Leon Evans, Peter Anderson, Mike Price and Mansel Abraham.

Within every organisati­on there are background workers who carry out thankless tasks and one of those is John Keene, a long serving chorister of the choir.

John was presented with a choir plaque, in recognitio­n of his hard work throughout the year in cajoling sponsors, to support the choir, and in sourcing raffle prizes for the annual raffle.

The choir will next be performing in the St David’s Day Concert on March 1 at Bryntirion Comprehens­ive School in support of the Urdd gosbaith Cymru (Bridgend Committee).

Also happy 70th birthday wishes to Bridgend Male Choir chairman Gareth Davies on his special birthday.

Coity Flower Club: The club meets on the first Tuesday of each month in Coity Church Hall, Coity. New members always welcome.

Bridgend Writers’ Circle: The group meet on the first Thursday of the month at Carnegie House (former library) Wyndham Street at 7.15pm.

Social Afternoon: Carol and Paul, Steward and stewardess of the Railway Club on Coity Road have started a Social Afternoon every Tuesday, from 1pm4pm. Food, bingo, raffle and music for just £2

Bridge MPS / The Zone: The Bridge MPS would like to thank the people of Bridgend who have been so generous in their support of The Zone Family Centre situated 4648 Dunraven Place.

The centre is open from 10am-12noon on Wednesdays for people to receive food items at on charge.

A cooking course programme entitled Eatwell is held on Tuesdays from 11am-1pm; Knit and Natter group meet from 10am-12 noon; and Arts and Crafts for toddlers meet from 1pm-3pm.

The Cuppa and a Chat group meet Fridays, from 10am-12noon.

Also on Friday mornings Men’s Mental Health group meet from 10am-12noon. All are very welcome.

Book Fair: The next Lions Club of Bridgend Annual Charity Book Fair will take place in April at Westward Community Centre Cefn Glas. Books can be handed in at the new collection centres at Westward Community Centre, Cefn Glas, on Sundays from 10.30am-11.30am and at Aberkenfig Welfare Hall, Hope Avenue, Aberkenfig, weekdays from 10.30am.

What’s On at your Library: At Carnegie House (former Library) Wyndham Street:

Wildflower, Herbs and Aromathera­py lessons – Classes started on February 1, from 10am-11am and run for six weeks. The cost will be £5 per class (including all materials and making of item to take home).
