THREE Bridgend County Borough clubs are on this year’s Boardroom Golf schedule, writes Tony Poole.

In the annual “Race to the Ritz”, the opening event of the year for members is Southerndo­wn on March 23.

The May fixture takes them to Pyle & Kenfig on May 18 while the Order of Merit will be settled during the final event of the season at Royal Porthcawl on November 2.

The other monthly engagement­s where members will tee it up are Ashburnham (April), Neath ( June), Langland Bay ( July), Clyne (August), Machynys (September) and Pennard (October).

The Champions Trophy is also up for grabs, and this year the event will be played on the 2010 Ryder Cup course at Celtic Manor in Newport.

After each golfing event a dinner will be staged in the respective clubhouse, culminatin­g in a Christmas Gala Dinner.

Boardroom Golf is for directors and business owners to grow their networks with like-minded individual­s in order to generate new business.

Third-placed Jane David ran up 38 points while further down the scoreboard came Jane Frampton (34), Emer Disley (33), Pamela Williams (32) and Jackie McKay (31).

With the England rugby team in town last weekend, former British Lions centre and Sky Sports pundit Will Greenwood enjoyed a round at Royal Porthcawl.

He played along with club star David Richards, the former Swansea and Wales fly-half.

Last Saturday, ahead of Wales taking on England in the Six Nations Championsh­ip at the Principali­ty Stadium, 86 brave souls teed it up in an England Stableford tournament.

Considerin­g the cold conditions, the scoring was toasty with Mark Jennings and Derek Robinson taking the main honours with an exceptiona­l score of 45 Stableford points.

Runners-up Frank Bradshaw and Barry Hawkins came in with 44 points to edge out on countback Peter Earl and Jamie Webb.

Countback also decided fourth spot with a better back six score of 43 points working in favour of Brian Marling and Jeremy M Smith. By popular request it was decided to play a reduced course of 16 holes. In first place with an excellent net score of 52 over the 16 holes were Roger Hatton, Wayne Newton and Norman Lloyd. Just one point back on 53 was the four-ball comprising Roy Denton, Gordon Martin, Eddie Fothergill and Ray Howorth. A net 54 secured third place for George Parry, Danny Mead and Gordon Campbell.
