LLANTWIT MAJOR ...... 3 TREDEGAR TOWN ....... 1

LUKE Cox took the plaudits with a two-goal blast, but a fine all-round term performance earned Llantwit Major the double over Tredegar Town, writes Tony Poole.

Cox – who netted in the reverse 2-0 win at Tredegar back in October – was again the side’s fox in the box while a superb Rob Jones strike took him on to the 10-goal mark for the season.

However, improving Tredegar made the Windmillers work hard for a victory that keeps them attached to the promotion race.

During the early exchanges, Kristian Smith, Jonny Fletcher and Jonny Butler dished up dominant showings.

The best chance for Llantwit Major to break the ice came when a Smith volley was parried into the path of Cox, who saw goalkeeper Morris miraculously keep out his shot.

The opener came on 43 minutes when impressive Tom Dante found Rob Jones, who hit the target with a 40-metre screamer.

His sizzling strike separated the sides at the break, and it remained that way until the 65th minute.

Rob Jones cut in from the right and a blocked shot fell to fox in the box Cox, who duly converted a bread and butter finish.

But the game then took a sinister twist in the 78th minute when Butler was served a red card by referee Paul Bright who took a dim view of handbags with a Tredegar man.

With both sides down to 10 men, the Windmillers lost another player when Connor Goldsworthy – on a club debut from Penybont – got a straight red for a two-footed challenge.

Worse followed when Tredegar halved the deficit – Ian Pettit converting a penalty - but the nine men had the last laugh.

Cox latched on to a late Jack Landsdown clearance, and a one-two with Smith gave Cox an eighth goal of the campaign.

Llantwit Major visit Treowen Stars on Saturday in the league.
