PENRHIWCEIBER RANGERS ...................... 1 CAERAU ......................... 1

CAERAU picked up a much-need point against Penrhiwceiber Rangers at The Glassbrook, but away form remains a major concern in their promotion quest, writes Tony Poole.

This represented a first away point out of a possible 12 having lost successive games on the road since December at Tredegar Town, Panteg and Treharris Athletic Western.

It’s this poor run of away form that has allowed leaders STM Sports to ease into a nine-point lead over the Riverboaters with both clubs having completed 17 matches.

But it’s what is bubbling under in the form of Llantwit Major and Bridgend Street that is giving Riverboat boss Gareth Darkes some sleepless nights.

Caerau headed to the Cynon Valley with a bare 11 while two Reserve team players were brought in to cover the bench.

But some key refereeing decisions were made from the centre circle – and the bulk of them went against the Riverboaters.

He denied Caerau a definite goal when top scorer Chay Davies flicked on for what seemed like a first Jarron Rumph senior goal.

It was goal-less at the break and on the hour, Rangers managed to get their noses in front.

During a goalmouth scramble, Dean Brown got the final touch from a seemingly off-side position.

And with the Riverboaters on course for a fourth consecutive away defeat, they just avoided the rocks.

In the 85th minute, saviour Tom Walters nipped in to secure them a point with his 13th goal of the season.

However, rumours coming out of the Riverboat on Saturday night suggested they may be on the verge of bolstering their attack with a proven scorer from another Division Three club.

This Saturday, Caerau hope to stage only a third home game in three months with Ynysygerwn the visitors.
