BRIDGEND TOWN has Jeremy Lawlor as Glamorgan allocated player for 2017 in the Thomas, Carroll South Wales Premier Cricket League, writes Tony Poole.

The 21-year-old top order batsman from Cardiff, who bowls occasional offbreaks, was last season with Pontarddulais.

He has previously taken in Premier League stints with Newport and his home club of St Fagans.

His father Peter, a talented batsman with the Stags a quarter of a century ago, played once for Glamorgan in 1981.

Jeremy Lawlor attended Llandaff Cathedral and Monmouth Schools while Phil Makinson was his mentor at St Fagans.

Having gone through the Glamorgan Academy system and studied at Cardiff Marylebone Cricket Club University (CMCCU), he has regularly figured for both Glamorgan Seconds and Wales Minor Counties.

However, he made a first-class debut for Glamorgan during their final home game of 2015 against Kent.

Lawlor previously appeared at first-class level for CMCCU, and last April he hit 81 against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.

Arguably his best innings, however, came back in September 2013 when still a pupil at Monmouth School.

Playing for MCC Schools against England Schools at Lord’s, Lawlor made 119 off 124 balls with three sixes.

Two years later he joined the Glamorgan staff and six first-class matches have yielded 194 runs at an average of 38.8.

Lawlor replaces James Kettleborough as Glamorgan player in Newbridge Fields this summer.

At the end of last season, the Welsh county didn’t offer ex-Northants opening batsman Kettleborough another contract.

Michael Powell was the first Glamorgan allocated to Bridgend Town in 2011, and the following year they had Will Bragg.

Ben Wright spent the summer of 2013 in Newbridge Fields and Scot Ruaidhri Smith did the honours in both 2014 and the year after.

Bridgend Town open a seventh Premier League campaign on April 29 against Neath in Newbridge Fields.
