A GOOD Samaritan had the end of his nose bitten off after he tried to break up a fight outside a pub in Bridgend.

Ashley Carey, 35, took a 1cm chunk out of his victim’s nose in the confrontation late at night.

Cardiff Crown Court heard Mathew Tame, 27, tried to break up a fight between Carey and a friend.

But Carey then turned on him and wrestled him to the floor before biting a chunk off the front of his nose.

Prosecutor Geoff Jones said: “The complainant saw Carey head butt his friend in a totally unprovoked attack.

“In order to prevent him causing any further injury, he grabbed the defendant around the neck.

“This gave rise to a struggle and both men fell to the floor outside the pub.

“The victim remembers Carey putting his teeth onto his nose and not letting go until he put his finger into the left eye corner of the defendant’s face.”

The court heard how the pair were eventually broken up by other customers outside The Walnut Tree pub in Bridgend on April 25, 2015.

An impact statement written by Mr Tame, from Bridgend, was read out by Mr Jones, which said that he has permanent scarring on his face.

“The end of his nose changes colour to purple and gets darker when he is out in the cold,” Mr Jones said.

“He finds the vision of it embarrassing and it upset his two young children,” he said.

The court heard that Carey has previous convictions which include affray and assault .

He once head butted a former partner in the face when she was holding a one-year-old child.

Andrew Taylor, defending, said: “He is a man, in my submission, who has a split personality.

“Ashley Carey and drinking do not go together.”

Carey, of Heol Camb- rensis, Bridgend, pleaded guilty to wounding only just before a trial was due to take place.

He was sentenced to 16 months in prison.
