Flying in the face of democracy

- with AM Caroline Jones

DURING the nine months I have written this message to Gazette readers I have made a point of refraining from criticising fellow politicians but I have to show surprise and disappointment at the Bridgend MP’s decision to vote against Brexit.

Madeline Moon was one of those MPs who went against the triggering of Article 50 to start the ball rolling for the departure of the UK from the EU.

And this is despite the fact that almost 55% of her Bridgend constituents last June voted to leave the EU and the vast majority of MPs including members of her own Labour Party backed the Government’s proposal to trigger Article 50.

It is arrogance to think that she knows better than the people of Porthcawl, Bridgend and the surrounding villages and for her to state in the Commons she could not stand by and see the people of the constituency suffer under Brexit is just nonsense and flies in the face of democracy.

She was patronising to suggest that she was protecting the people of Bridgend against Brexit.

I can quite understand why people are calling for Mrs Moon to resign.

On a more local note I am delighted that the TATA steelworkers have voted in favour of a package which should secure their futures.

I know that pensions will be lower but the important thing is that there are still jobs in Port Talbot.

Finally council tax in Bridgend is to rise by 2.9% and I am very perturbed by some of the cutbacks particularly the £21,000 being chopped from the tourism budget and the £60,000 from beach lifeguard cover – I hope that safety will not be jeopardised.
