Coun Megan Butcher: This newspaper covered the death of Coun Megan Butcher in last week’s edition.

Her funeral then took place last Wednesday at Margam Creamatorium, at which I attended with some 700 others. This was a huge funeral, filling the chapel, plus many standing, then several hundred plus, were left outside. The Rev Dr Duncan Walker officiated, at whose church Megan attended.

We then heard a tribute from a long time friend of Megan’s, a lady named Maureen Lewis, who told us about the day trips they all enjoyed each Friday.

Neil Butcher, Megans son, also paid tribute, which was very moving.

Several hymns and prayers later, a former neighbour, Martyn Jones, read a poem.

So that was the final ending of a lady who raised so much money for charity as well as serving this community!

Bridgend Guide Dogs: A lovely event took place last Sunday in aid of the Mayor’s Civic Charity fund. The event held at Court Colman, attended by the Mayor and Mayoress, Coun Reg and Mrs Jenkins.

Coun Nora Clarke a volunteer for Bridgend Guide Dogs, told the guests how guide are trained and chosen.

A volunteer, Sandra, brought with her, Bowie a 10 month old Labrador who is being trained.

Very few guests had any idea of the time and involvement in training a guide dog.

It costs around £50,000 for the life of a guide dog before retirement. Some 180,000 people each year need a guide dog.

All the guide dogs in the UK are trained and run by volunteers – the UK started the Guide dog movement in 1931!
