TWO communities fed up with litter and dog mess ruining their areas have carried out spring cleans.

Twenty-five residents of Rest Bay and Nottage in Porthcawl tackled a walkway known locally as “poo alley”.

During a weekend cleanup organised by councillor Norah Clarke they dug, lopped branches, brushed away rubbish and moved debris to clear the lanes running from Sandpiper Road to Anglesey Way and Anglesey Way down to Rest Bay. She said they also picked up all of the dog mess and the dog mess bags that had been dropped, while widening and clearing the lanes.

“I would like to thank each and every one that turned out to help,” said Coun Clarke.

“We would now like all those using these two lanes to look after them by picking up after their dog and placing the poo bag into bins and not onto the ground or into the hedgerow. The clean up took 25 residents eight hours and we would ask that the lanes are now looked after by everyone.

“The volunteers have now created the newly named Beach Walk, a fully wheelchair accessible pathway, so please let’s keep our environment clean for residents, visitors and wildlife.”

During the spring clean in Brackla, Bridgend, one group of residents tackled the area around the skate park, the winding path and the woods. Another group cleaned up by Archdeacon John Lewis Primary School and the vicinity of Rhiw Cae Mawr and Rhiw Las.

A spokesman said: “A big thanks to Brian from Keep Wales Tidy, and it was great to see support from South Wales Police Cadets, PCSOs, current Brackla councillors and prospective Brackla councillors (irrelevant of the party) and residents of Brackla. Thanks also to the Haywain for providing refreshments.

“It’s great to feel the community coming together for the people who live, work and visit Brackla!”

A second Brackla spring clean is planned for Sunday, April 2.
