Mayor’s Fund Events: Forthcomin­g events include:

Friday, March 31 – Resistance to Murder, a hilarious murder mystery play based on the French Resistance in World War II with a prize if you can identify the murderer at the Workingmen’s Club, Maesteg, 7pm. Tickets £8 including a buffet.

Thursday, April 6 – A Fashion Show is being held at Maesteg Comprehens­ive School, bringing together both pupils and members of the local community and many local businesses in the Llynfi valley.

The show begins at 6.30pm, but the event starts at 5.30pm providing an opportunit­y to browsing at the stalls.

Sunday, April 9 – Easter Egg Hunt at Maesteg Welfare Park, from 11am, with face painting, bouncy castle and a variety of refreshmen­ts on sale, this is a fun event that promises not to be missed.

The Mayor’s Fund is reviving an old tradition by holding a Tug of War competitio­n at the Easter Egg Hunt and anyone who would like to enter a team of 8 male, female or under 16s can contact leidasalwa­y@yahoo.co.uk

Saturday, April 29 – The Mayor of Maesteg’s Annual Charity Ball is at Maesteg Town Hall, from 7pm. A four-course dinner and souvenir mask for £27.50 with the music of Swing Shift with vocalist Ryland. This year’s theme being Masquerade.

Musical Triumph: A full Maesteg town hall witnessed an excellent 42nd annual concert by Côr Meibion Maesteg ar Cylch. A feast of music by the choir and the wonderful, talented soloists made for a very successful evening.

Compere for the evening was Rebecca John of the BBC herself a member of Cor y Gleision the Cardiff blues choir who did an excellent job of introducin­g, and explaining all the songs for the evening.

This was the 17th annual concert arranged and conducted by Rhian Jenkins and by the standard of the choirs repertoire shows the hard work and expertise that Rhian brings to the choir who appear to go from strength to strength.

Welsh Night: On Wednesday, March1, at Bethel community Church Maesteg, Côr Meibion Maesteg ar Cylch organised and performed a celebratio­n concert to mark St David’s Day. Sharing the stage with them and performing in their own right were Côr Merched Cwm Llynfi and Col Canto. A full house were treated to a feast of Welsh music.

At the end of the concert which was a great success, the President of Côr Meibion, Huw Irranca-Davies AM, presented gifts to the very talented musical directors and accompanis­ts of all the choir.

Welsh Young Singer: The prestigiou­s Dunraven Welsh Young Singer of the Year final will be held at Maesteg Town Hall on March 25 at 6.30pm (doors open 5.45pm).

Dennis O’Neill, the world-renowned tenor has pledged his support. Beverly Humphreys, our Vice President, will compere the event.

Exciting News: This Sunday, March 19 from 11am, Maesteg Ukulele Club will be appearing live on Jamie Owen’s Sunday show on BBC Radio Wales.

Maesteg Ukulele Club meet every Monday at The Cross Inn, Cwmfelin from 7.30pm.

Art Society: If you have a talent for drawing/ painting/designing you may like to join this society. They meet at Maesteg College Mondays from 4pm- 6pm and work in a variety of media.

History Society: The Llynfi Valley Historical Society is at 7pm on the first Tuesday of each month at their new venue of St David’s Church (opposite Asda). They are due to meet next on April 4.

Choir News: The following choirs are in the area if you would like to join:

Côr Meibion Maesteg a’r cylch/Maesteg Male Voice Choir rehearse at the Celtic club on Thursdays and every other Tuesday starting at 7pm-9pm on Thursday with a 15-minute break and 7pm-8.30pm Tuesdays with no break.

Côr Merched Cwm Llynfi, the Llynfi Valley Ladies Choir rehearse at the Catholic Church – St Mary’s and St Patrick’s – on Wednesdays 7pm-9pm.

The Gleemen – Maesteg Gleemen Male Voice Choir

Cyngerdd/Concert: Maesteg Children’s Choir together with Ysgol Cynwyd Sant present an evening of joyful music on Wednesday, April 5, at St David’s Church (opposite Asda) at 7pm. Joining them will be soloists from YGG Langynwyd.

Tickets cost £4 from the choirs (or pay at the door) and all proceeds go towards the eisteddfod.

Yoga Class: St David’s Church holds weekly ‘seated yoga’ classes, on Mondays from 10.30am11.30am (except bank holidays). £4 per session.

Maesteg WI: We meet on the third Thursday of every month (except August) from 7pm at Maesteg Rugby Club in the upstairs lounge.

Rambling Along: Maesteg Ramblers will meet this coming Sunday at 9am for the Ewenny Priory walk.

Maesteg & Llynfi Valley U3A: The group meets every week at various venues, but on the fourth Tuesday of each month they meet at Central Church Maesteg. Visit www.maestegu3a.org for details.

U3A is a self-help organisati­on for people no longer in full time employment providing educationa­l, creative and leisure opportunit­ies in a friendly environmen­t.

Local U3As are social cooperativ­es which draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their own members to organise and provide interest groups.
