A MARCH Stableford competition last Saturday at Coed-y-Mwstwr saw an incredible 19 players go under par.

Winner Andrew Goss came in with 42 points and it came from 17-scor- ing holes, as he got a blob on the penultimate hole.

The victory was built around 10 pars with runner-up Geoffrey Jones just one point behind (birdie on 12; 10 pars and blob on hole 16).

Canny Scot Jimmy North was third on a 39-point card courtesy of birdie on the 12th hole and 10 pars.

The next three best scores were also 39’s and came from Mark Phillis (birdies on seven and 16), Dermot Keegan and Senior Captain David B FordWilliams (two on hole four).

Four players then extracted 38 points out of their rounds – Andrew Pick, Barry Lewis, Peter Ashman and Wayne Williams.

And 37 proved a popular score, appearing on the cards of Steven Evans, Stephen Stock, Stephen McAllen, Lloyd Stock, Steve Hearne, Ben McAndrew, Julian Rudd, Tyron Williams and Matthew Richards.

Par 36 points was then struck by Mark Tuck, Simon Lake, Gareth Summerton, Stephen Hesketh, Sean Boga-Lake, Ross A Davies, Jonny McEachen and Layton P Bennetta.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Blackball potted more success last week in the Senior Stableford event.

Having gained a lovely victory in the St Valentine’s Day competition the previous month, the hot potter this time entered the clubhouse with 40 points (birdie on hole six together with 11 pars).

Two points back came Richard T Commander, who commanded respect after holing out for three on the par-four sixth and shooting eight pars.

But he came unstuck after failing to score on the par-three eighth hole.

Third-placed Philip Weston signed for 37 points with 10 pars and eight bogeys, and on the same mark came Peter Ashman and Andrew Cox.

Par 36 points was then recorded by three players – Gerald Howe, Jonny McEachen and Philip Davies.

D R Cannon fired 35 points, as did former Garw and Llangeinor football star Clive Dyke and John Jones.

The competition attracted 39 starters with feisty competitor D R Stead having to fight the course during an unusually low haul of points.

Three counts of two were registered, and they were on the cards of Michael Wegner (hole four), Gerald Howe (hole eight) and former roadrunner Adrian Morgan (17th).

On the Ladies scene, Victoria Brooks and Caroline E Tremlett took the Coronation Foursomes with a score of 36 Stableford points.

They finished five points clear of Julie Davies and Nicola Hopkins with Wendy Asquith and Janet Roberts a further three points back.
