TONYREFAIL ................ 2 PORTHCAWL TOWN ATHLETIC ...................... 1

TO say that Tonyrefail were waiting for Porthcawl Town Athletic at Tynybryn Park last Saturday was understating things, writes Tony Poole.

Last month, Ton suffered a 4-1 defeat against the Seasiders at Lock’s Lane, and they were obvi- ously looking to turn the tables.

Porthcawl welcomed back defender Ben Davies, but ultimately they paid the price for a sluggish start.

Ton had returned to winning ways the week before with a 5-2 home win over Cornelly United.

Basically, the Ton air force bombed Porthcawl out of the game inside half an hour, scoring twice, and it wasn’t until the approach to half time that the visitors began to find their feet.

But two smart saves from Ricky Freitag denied Jorge Crofts along with a dipping effort from Jake Lane.

However, the Seasiders bucked up their ideas on the restart, and began to get change out of the home defence.

That said they received a body blow after Joe Downes was dismissed on the hour for a second bookable offence.

But they kept on plugging away and pop idol Jordan Marks got nine marks out of 10 for a series of piercing crosses.

And it was game on again after Andrew Fisher rode a challenge in the right channel, and sent Crofts haring through on goal.

The young hitman did the rest with a 10th goal of the campaign setting up a grandstand finish.

A couple of set pieces caused problems for Ton, who nevertheless clung on to all three points.

This defeat has placed more pressure on Porthcawl, and on Saturday they must prevent a coronation for Cogan at Lock’s Lane in a six-point basement battle.
