More Goytre woe for Bont

GOYTRE (MON) ............. 3 PENYBONT .................... 0

LEAFY Goytre in the Monmouthshire countryside is never a happy hunting ground for Penybont, and so it proved on their latest visit, writes Tony Poole.

The Bridgend super club had lost on their three previous visits to Plough Road, and little changed this time around.

However, manager Rhys Griffiths raised some eyebrows in playing a back five, comprising himself, Tom Atyeo, Ioan Emanuel, Kane Owen and James Parry.

But it led to one of their least effective showings in months, and never threat- ened to return home with the points.

The opening half was easily forgettable with the only real chance that Bont created saw Owain Warlow flash a shot wide of the target.

But Goytre, who are still reeling from being found guilty of playing a ringer at Llandudno in the J D Welsh Cup and being removed from the tournament, gradually improved.

And they never looked back after captain Kris Leek sprung a 50th-minute leek in the Bont defence for Luke Prosser to net.

The Bridgend super club then suffered a worse fate when player-manager Griffiths committed a defensive howler.

His blunder on the hour led to the sun shining on Goytre as Lewis Sommers drove the ball past goalkeeper Rhys Wilson.

Bont responded with top scorer Marcus Griffiths heading just over the top of the goal guarded by Nicky Thomas.

But this was against the trend, as Wilson and Tom Atyeo had to block shots for the home side to enhance the lead.

However, it did become 3-0 in the 81st minute when substitute Blake Davies made certain Goytre remain just a point behind table-topping Barry Town United.

Next up for Penybont is Saturday’s trip to Port Talbot Town, who last weekend slid into the relegation zone following a key 2-0 defeat in a basement battle at Undy Athletic.
