DIVISION 2 WEST CENTRAL

-

MORRISTON ................ 17 TONDU ......................... 26

THIS game will probably be one that sealed the title for Tondu, but it was by no means an easy ride.

They came up against a Morriston side that was intent on making a game of it, and it was the home side that opened the scoring after 13 minutes when full back Rhodri Jones sailed over to finish a fine attack, winger Chris Shill adding the extra points. But it wasn’t long before the visitors were level, a quick throw in in midfield resulted in a flowing move that saw full back Matthew Murphy sailing over in the opposite corner, Josh Tatchell added the conversion and then two penalties to give Tondu a 13-7 half-time advantage.

The second period started with a wake-up call for the league leaders after some poor tackling, second row Chris Gorvet smashed his way over for a deserved try and Shill converted to put Morriston into a 14-13 lead. Shill then added a penalty for the home side before a dominant Tondu pack finally got their reward, with two five metre scrums leading to two well taken tries for veteran No 8 Nathan Strong.

The final quarter largely belonged to Tondu and perhaps they should have sealed a bonus point but it was a Josh Tatchell penalty that finally made the game safe.

Tondu now travel to Aberavon Green Stars after the international break and seem destined to bounce straight back to division one.

Before that though, Tondu have the little matter of a Silver Ball quarterfinal against Dinas Powis tonight (Wednesday) at Heol-y-Cyw RFC, ko 7.15pm.
