Top award for P&K

AFTER a couple of near misses, Pyle & Kenfig has hit the target in becoming Golf Union of Wales club of the year, writes Tony Poole.
The Kenfig-based club saw off the challenge of the other shortlist candidates – Bryn Meadows, Clyne, Lakeside Garthmyl in Powys along with past winners in Langland Bay, Milford Haven and Pennard.
They received the award earlier in the month at a GUW presentation ceremony staged at Celtic Manor.
Club captain Roger Parsons is delighted the honour has coincided with his term at the Kenfig helm but as he explained, it’s all down to everyone pulling together.
“It’s taken five years for us to reach our destination as GUW club of the year – and a lot of hard work along the way.
“The driving range and establishment of a ninehole course, a thriving junior section leading to a Golf Development of Wales junior certificate and winning the Junior Inter Club event all played their part in us getting the award.
“New members have been attracted by the golf course being open 24/7 and 365 days a year, and all in all we’re proud and privileged to receive the honour.
“Our merchandise and flags, even the club website will now display the title.
“We’ve come close in the past to winning the award, but this time around an extra-special push was made, and it’s now a case of mission accomplished.’’
This year was destined to be a special year for P&K, as they are once more staging Senior Open Championship qualifiers and hosting the Ladies British Open Championship.
But it doesn’t end there, as work is currently being performed on the ProShop to accommodate an indoor simulator for golfers to experience playing worldwide courses from the clubhouse.
However, the main focus over the coming months is on this summer and the Senior Open Championship qualifiers along with the Ladies British Open Championship.
But it won’t stop P&K making a determined challenge to retain the prestigious GUW club of the year award.
