Laleston Gardening Club: The funeral service of Hugh Worgan took place on Wednesday, March 8 at Bethel Baptist Church, Laleston followed by cremation at Coychurch Crematorium.

Such was the popularity and respect for Hugh that both Bethel and the crematorium were filled to capacity.

He was a man of strong Christian beliefs who had made a massive contribution to the life of the Baptist Church and the officiating minister, Pastor Jim Grindell spoke warmly of the man who was loved by all who had been privileged to know him.

Hugh was the husband of Margaret, the President of Laleston Gardening Club and together they have done so much to further the interests of a club that has occupied so much of their time.

Hugh would support Margaret when she organised so many of the club’s activities, such as the summer coach trips and various functions throughout the year and he would regularly be seen at Cliff Cottage with his tool box sorting out some problem that others had failed to solve.

Nothing was too much trouble for him and he will be missed in so many ways.

It is reassuring for Margaret to know that she has so many wonderful friends to support her in Mayfield Avenue and the Gardening Club will always be a source of comfort for her.

Plans are continuing to be made for the 5th Annual Plant Sale and Coffee Morning to be held on Saturday, May 6.

Sian James and Dennis Roberts are organising the cultivation of a whole range of flower and vegetable plants from seed and plugs and a number of members’ glass houses are being used in various locations.

It is a huge commitment in time and effort by Sian and Dennis and it is only fair to mention the support of their better halves Alan and Judith respectively.

Many improvements have taken place at Cliff Cottage in rescent times but there is still more to be done and it is for this reason for events such as plant sales and coffee mornings such as plants sales and coffee mornings are organised in order to raise the money necessary to fund such projects.

Sun Credit, Bavo and Laleston Community Council have been generous with providing great support in the past but the club have the primary responsibility to raise the money needed.

The club have not only raised money for their own purpose but a plaque in Cliff Cottage acknowledges the fact that the ladies’ section has raised more than £10,000 for the Macmillan cancer charity by supporting the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event which is held annually in October.

Members should be aware that the show schedules for the Annual Show in September are now available and can be collected from the club.
