A CHARITY which provides help and support to the people of Bridgend is to develop its community garden and growing area thanks to the local Tesco Extra store.

The Bridge Mentoring Plus Scheme was founded in 2002 to try to prevent youngsters drifting into a life of crime or becoming socially excluded.

It continues to provide a number of services and opportunities which are open to all members of the community, including training, volunteering and mentoring from its base in Dunraven Place.

The donation from the Tesco Extra store on Cowbridge Road has helped to set up the new garden project at Dunraven Place.

The project is aimed at combating loneliness by encouraging people to grow their own fruit, vegetables and flowers as well as teaching children about where the food on their plates comes from.

The donation is part of the Tesco Extra store’s commitment to help local community groups and charities, and its ongoing work to support The Bridge Mentoring Plus Scheme.

Tesco Bridgend Extra store manager Ray Russell said: “The Bridge Mentoring Plus Scheme does some fantastic work in the local community and we are pleased to be able to help them with this scheme and with the wider projects it delivers.”

The Bridge Mentoring Plus Scheme’s Laura Thomas said: “As a charity we rely on support from the local community and Tesco have been fantastic with the help they have given us.

“They really have gone above and beyond and without them we couldn’t deliver much of what we do without the continued support of Tesco’s and its staff.”
