TWO community stalwarts who have raised thousands of pounds for charity have been honoured for their work.

Linda Knight, the landlady of the Six Bells Pub, and resident Alun Clemett, have received recognition for their dedication to the village of Coity, near Bridgend.

The pair are sharing this year’s Coity Higher Community Council Annual Community Award.

The council said both were given an engraved smaller shield to keep and the winners and their partners were also presented with flowers and a bottle of wine.

The award recognises achievement, work or activities which benefit the community of Coity Higher, which includes the wards of Coity, Litchard and Pendre and includes the new Parc Derwen estate.

The council said since returning to the village three-and-a-half years ago with her family, Linda has made the pub a vital part of the community.

The award citation stated: “Mrs Knight and her family have run the Six Bells pub which is a vital part of the community.

“In this time she has organised many fundraising events and allowed others to do so on her premises. Amongst others, she has raised hundreds of pounds for Ty Hafan, allowed others to run events which have also raised hundreds of pounds for local chari- ties such as Marie Curie, Ellie’s Journey, Meningitis Now and associated with the local school at Big Lunch events.

“In addition, the pub has supported the pub quiz for several years and every penny raised goes to local charities. Mrs Knight also encourages community spirit via social media.”

Of Alun, the council said: “Alun has been a constant member of many community organisations within Coity village. His many roles include former chairman of Coity Village Association, founder of Coity Football club, former community councillor, he’s a school governor at Coety Primary School and a lead member of the annual fundraising Choirs in the Castle team.

“He has been part of this team since its inception and the group has raised over £15,000 for local causes over the years. Over the many years at CVA events whether it’s a bonfire or fete, Alun has been one of the first to arrive and one of the last to leave, whatever the weather.”
