COED-Y-MWSTWR

-

PETER Ashman last week recorded a remarkable treble at Coed-y-Mwstwr.

Having taken the Senior Stableford competition on March 14, the following Saturday he trotted up in the French Six Nations event.

And three days later, he secured back-to-back Senior Stableford victories that are rarely achieved.

In his latest Senior Stableford victory last week, Ashman entered 37 points on a card that contained just four pars, but points on every hole.

The victory was by one point over Dave Evans, who rued blobs on the first and 10th holes.

Also on par 36 points was Senior Captain David B Ford-Williams (five pars) and Mark Raybould (seven pars).

Hats were doffed to Colin Edwards for coming in with 35 points, and he was followed on the scoreboard by six players on 34 points – Tony Lang, John Rogers, Michael Davies, Peter Beynon, Gerald Howe and Richard T Commander.

Though feisty competitor D R Stead once more fought his way through another mixed round, he nevertheless punched 28 points on a heavyweight card.

In the French Six Nations Stableford tournament, Ashman along with Steve O’Connell, Paul Reed and Christopher Wilson mounted the victory rostrum with a score of 62-6 = 56.

Runners-up Gareth Jones, Jack Kelly and Jackie Summerton signed for 68-9 = 59 while Richard T Commander, Andrew Goss and Nicola Hopkins ran up 70-10 = 60 to finish third.

Fourth with 69-9 = 60 were Stephen McAllen, Matthew Richards and Janet Roberts.

Meanwhile, Darren Yates last Saturday shot 41 points to become the clear winner of a March Stableford event.

Playing off a 15 handicap, he went birdie on hole 16 over the trees, and harvested eight pars on a winning card.

His victory was by three points over 21-handicapper Andy Dunn, who recorded seven magnificent pars only to get done by blobs on holes seven and 11.

Also on the 38-point mark was third-placed Chris Wilson (birdie on uphill 14th and nine pars) and Vincent Pritchard.

Senior captain David B Ford-Williams was one of five men who hit 37 points – the others were Stephen Stock, Steve Williams, Stuart Wilson and Jimmy North.

Par 36 cards were handed in by Geoffrey Jones and Steve O’Connell.

In a Ladies Midweek Stableford, Julie Davies swept to victory on 34 points (birdie on hole six and four pars).

Runner-up Gill Osborne scored 29 points; third-place Sian Hooper was a further point back while on the 27-mark came Wendy Asquith, Julie Reade and Nicola Hopkins.
