TRETHOMAS BLUEBIRDS .................... 1 CAERAU ......................... 3

CAERAU built confidence against Trethomas Bluebirds at Bedwas RFC ahead of defining back-toback clashes with promotion rivals Llantwit Major, writes Tony Poole.

But with the top-two clubs – STM Sports and Llantwit Major – both winning, it was a case of as you were at the top.

The Riverboaters took the reverse clash with the Bluebirds, 2-0, back in November and were full value for the double.

Though playing into a stiff wind, Caerau breezed it during the first half, carving out the majority of scoring opportunities.

It took them just eight minutes to take the lead with golden boy Dale Price – who has experienced a lean goal-scoring streak – curling in a free kick to move on to just five goals this season.

The Bluebirds feathered their nest with a few corners, but Caerau looked strong through Tom Walters and Chay Davies.

And in the 40th minute they went 2-0 up from a Matt Rae cross that Chay Davies converted into a sweet 16th goal this term.

But during the second half it was the Bluebirds who were flying high, and they surprisingly had a goal ruled out for off side.

Steadier finishing would have surely got them back into contention, but the Riverboaters went on to make things safe.

Tom Walters saw a 30-metre thunderbolt rattle the cross bar on 80 minutes, but made no mistake with the ricochet.

His 18th goal of the season set up a 13th league win of the season, but close to time the Bluebirds were awarded a goal after the referee adjudged the ball had crossed the goal line.

Caerau now have nine remaining matches, and six are at the Riverboat where traditionally they take some stopping.

They commence the home games against Llantwit Major a week tonight while Tredegar, Treowen Stars, Penrhiwceiber, Cwm Welfare and STM Sports will also head to the Llynfi Valley.

They visit Llantwit Major (Saturday) while other trips will take them to Treowen Stars and STM Sports.
