Bont move up to fifth

-

PENYBONT went fifth after wrapping up a league double over Cambrian & Clydach at the Kymco Stadium, writes Tony Poole.

It was also 3-1 when the sides last met back in November during the reverse fixture, and this time around the Bridgend super club never really looked back after leading 2-0 at the break.

It took quarter of an hour for either side to mount a goal threat, and Bont then went close through Owain Warlow.

They went ahead in the 17th minute when a beefy Kane Owen corner found the potent head of Rhys Griffiths – and the Bont chief headed his troops in front.

And in the 23rd minute, Warlow and Josef Hopkins were on the same wavelength, resulting in Warlow making it 2-0.

Early in the second half, Aberystwyth import Kostya Georgievsky headed over and then his brother Timmy, who signed from Garden Village, departed the bench.

But the Rhondda Valley side were back in contention on the hour when a nifty dink from recent Ton Pentre arrival Leon Jacka got the better of Rhys Wilson in the home goal.

However, Cam revival hopes evaporated in the 73rd minute when a Warlow run gave Hopkins a 14th goal of the season.

Close to time, Cam almost pulled one back, but Wilson with one hand denied Bridgend College student Cameron Keetch.

This Saturday, Penybont remain at the Kymco Stadium, and are involved in a first clash of the season with Taffs Well.

A week tonight (Wednesday) Bont visit Cwmbran Celtic, and on April 8 they host Caerau Ely.

That will leave them with just one more home game – Goytre (Mon) on April 22 – while other away fixtures involve Monmouth (19th), Goytre United (25th) and Taffs Well (29th).

Meanwhile, with last week’s South Wales Senior Cup final against Taffs Well called off at Aberdare Town, it will now be played on May 10 at a venue yet to be announced.
