Maesteg still in the chase for promotion

-

CWMLLYNFELL ............ 5 MAESTEG .................... 41

MAESTEG bounced back from their derby defeat by Maesteg Quins to outclass strugglers Cwmllynfell.

In a very competitive division, Maesteg are one of six teams separated by just eight points at the top but are at best outsiders for promotion.

When the home side went into the lead with an unconverted try, they may have thought that it was to be their day.

Unfortunately, that was to be their only score as young right winger Callum Powell finished off a smart threequarter move with centre Cameron Jones adding the extra points.

It was the visiting forwards with Matthew Davies, Scott Kelly and Nathan Watkins to the fore who set up the next score as the dynamic Cameron Davies, making his first start since last September, stormed over from 30 metres for Cameron Jones to add the conversion.

Full back Jon Phillips, whose excellent broken play running from deep was again a feature, started and finished the next move as the ball went through several pairs of hands before reaching his once more.

The second half saw left winger Kieron John, happily returned from a lengthy post op period, put in a great run into home territory which was taken on by centre Sam Griffiths, with the move ending when prop Jack Powell crashed over for Cameron Jones to convert.

It was a half break from a lineout by outside half Kieron Harris which set up the next score, when pick and drives on the home line saw No 8 Ryan Turner cross for Cameron Jones to add the extra points which he followed up with a penalty some minutes later.

The try of the match brought scoring to an end which started with a dummy pass 70 metres out by prop Lyndon Davies.

One further pass released winger Callum Powell, and sheer pace took him away from any would be tackler for his second touchdown of the game.
