CORNELLY UNITED ..... 5 CWMBACH ROYAL STARS ............................. 2

CORNELLY United stretched an unbeaten run to four matches with a comfortable home win over bottom club Cwmbach Royal Stars, writes Tony Poole.

A seventh league win of the season was built around electric sweeper Matt Davies, who was assured at the back and headed home two corners in identical fashion.

It took the Meadow Street boys just 45 seconds to take the lead with three of the four Jones boys in the team combining sweetly.

Joey and Dann did the spadework, and Callum Jones tucked the ball under the diving body of goalkeeper Youssef Maohoub.

A 13thminute save from Aaron Jones prevented Stars levelling via Joe Meek, and Cornelly went 2-0 up on 28 minutes.

Dai Cane dispossessed Bryan Forbes, and a dainty dink from the Grove golf star with a wedge clipped the far post and went in.

And Cornelly were on their way once Davies headed in a Joey Jones corner three minutes before the break.

That led to the Meadow Street boys switching off, and basically nothing untoward unfolded until the 71st minute.

Joe Shaw forced Maohoub into making a near post save, and he planted the subsequent corner on the potent head of Davies.

That made it 4-0 and soon after a delightful Dale Smith run from the centre circle ended in a deadly accurate 20-metre shot giving him a sixth goal of the campaign.

But during dying embers, Stars began to shine and Owen Williams headed in a Tyler Hollidge corner in similar fashion to the two from Davies for Cornelly.

And right on time, Penarth referee Neil Stephens felt Joey Jones handled in the box, and Hollidge converted the ensuing penalty.

Next up for Cornelly is Clwb Cymric away on Saturday – last month the Meadow Street meeting between the clubs ended 2-2.

That will leave Cornelly with two remaining home matches – Tonyrefail on April 15 and FC Cwmaman seven days later.
