KEV KICKS OFF

- With Kevin Ellis

FIRSTLY I’ve got to congratulate the Wales u18s team who beat Scotland 22-6 at Cardiff Arms Park last Saturday. Wales were the better team and thoroughly deserved the win. Captain Tommy Reffell and scrum half Aron Hemmings were superb in a great team performance. They face Canada tonight at Parc y Scarlets and Ireland in Ystrad Mynach on Sunday. Let’s hope they get two wins and then they can look forward to a tough tour to South Africa in the summer. Exciting times ahead for these young, talented boys.

It’s great to see Brynteg boy Evan Yardley back to top form with RGC 1404, scoring a cracking try in thier win last Saturday against Ebbw Vale. He’s just come back from a broken thumb so it’s great timing as RGC take on Pontypridd in the Swalec Cup final this Sunday at the Principality Stadium.

Everyone is talking about how many Welsh boys will go on the Lions tour to NZ. My Welsh players to tour are Leigh Halfpenny, Liam Williams, George North, Jonathan Davies, Jamie Roberts, Rhys Webb, Taulupe Faletau, Ross Moriarty, Justin Tipuric, Sam Warburton, Alun Wyn Jones and Ken Owens. I’ve gone for 12 Welshman. The question marks will be Liam Williams, Jamie Roberts and Ross Moriarty. I think England will have the largest contingent.

It was good to see Bridgend Sports and Tondu get promoted in thier leagues. I hear Gareth David, my ex-Blue Bulls and Raven stand-off is coaching Sports next year. This is great news for the club.

Well done to the Ravens who had a good win over city slickers Cardiff at the Brewery Field. QUESTION: Do you think Sam Warburton will be fit and captain the Lions and why would you leave Dan Biggar out?

Yes, I think Warburton will be fit and captain – or one of them if Gatland names a few. I think George Ford will get the third outside half spot behind Johnny Sexton and Owen Farrell. Ford is more of an attacking 10 than Biggar and we need to play an attacking game against the All Blacks.
