300 people to take part in 30-mile charity walk

IT IS four years since a group of friends began a regular charity walk. Each year it has grown and grown – and this year 300 people will take part in The Big Walk to raise money for prostate cancer charity Prostate Cymru.

The idea began when friends from Kenfig Hill Rugby Club were fundraising for a charity walk up Kilimanjaro.

That year a handful completed the 30-mile walk.

Now they can proudly say that their 526 walkers have raised £83,000 for a charity close to their hearts.

They were inspired after a number of men at their club were diagnosed with the condition.

They have had support from stars from the world of rugby including Warren Gatland and Gethin Jenkins, and Game of Thrones actor Owen Teale.

This year’s event is being held on June 10 and will again set off from Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.

Organiser Chris Leyshon said: “It’s a popular event because it brings together different communities of Wales and the money raised stays here in Wales.

“The stats show there is a difference in funding between England and Wales. We have people taking part from all over England and Wales.

“We’re always surprised to hear how many people get tested after taking part in the event.

“As a result, some of the men have discovered they have the disease so we are raising awareness too.

“Some of our walkers take part for a reason and at the walk last year there was a group of 30 led by Lynda Thomas and they all crossed the line together which was incredible to see.”

Registration for the event closes on Sunday.

Walkers are asked to pay a £20 registration fee and raise £20 for the charity. The event will again be started by a mystery celebrity guest who will be revealed on the day.
