Town returns to war years to commemorate role it played
BRIDGEND played an important role in World War II and on June 10 the town will be marking this with the Wartime Bridgend event.
The town centre will be transported back to the 1940s with demonstrations, period games and activities that were common place during the war, including toy soldier painting and make do and mend.
Live music entertainment will also take place throughout the day at the Bridgend Town Councilorganised event, alongside historical walks by John Dunkley-Williams, a rationing stall organised by Bryntirion Comprehensive and a “Dig for Victory” display by Bridgend Allotments.
Bridgend and District Local History Society will present a photographic exhibition in Carnegie House, alongside Michael Ridley’s wartime display.
There will also be a full size replica of the Spitfire MK I/II aircraft in Dunraven Place and a Winston Churchill lookalike who will make an appearance around the town throughout the day.
The events will come to a close with a lively evening of wartime entertainment in Bridgend Rugby Club, featuring international swing vocalist and trumpeter Ricky Hunter and 1940s Sweetheart Amanda Beaumont.
A town council spokeswoman said: “Be swept back to the big band era with hits from Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra and the Andrew Sisters. The 1940s Night Out will be a wonderful end to Wartime Bridgend, so whether you’re a jiver, a lindy-hopper, a fox trotter, or you just enjoy a good ol’ singalong, there will be something for everyone.
“Wartime Bridgend promises to be a unique experience in historical terms for the Bridgend area and will be great day out for all the family.”
