A CARDIFF city centre hotel has won an environment award, beating competition from 234 other hotels across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Hilton Cardiff was crowned best performing Hilton hotel in a green initiative set up by the global hotel chain to help preserve the environment and lower its use of water and energy.

The hotel on Kingsway won the award for its commitment to recycling, water reuse and using food waste to generate electricity.

The accolade comes after Hilton Cardiff earned the highest level for TripAdvisor’s Green Leader programme which recognises sound environmental performances by hotels and B&Bs.

Marie Fagan, general manager at Hilton Cardiff, said: “As a leading hotel in Cardiff, we place a huge amount of importance on our environmental practice, and it is fantastic that this latest achievement recognises and rewards the efforts of our entire team.

“We are also thrilled that we have managed to scoop the platinum level for TripAdvisor’s Green Leader programme, which, again, recognises our commitment to the environment.

“We look forward to implementing new technologies to continue our best environmental practice going forward.”

Hilton Cardiff diverted more than 80% of its waste from landfill last year and reduced its water and energy use by around a third.

The 197-bedroom premises recently revealed it had reduced its energy consumption by over a million (kwh) units per year.

Darren Cook, vice president engineering ops for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Hilton, said: “Con- gratulations to all the Hilton Cardiff Team Members on achieving environmental excellence.

“As a global company operating in more than 100 countries, we take our environmental impact very seriously, through the products and services we use to how we conserve and use energy and water.

“The Hilton Cardiff team has made significant progress in its environmental performance, and it’s great that we can reward them in this way.”

All 135 staff members of the Hil- ton Cardiff team received an Apollo mountain bike as a reward for their efforts.

Marie added: “Our employees are really excited to have been given the state-of-the-art bikes, which many will now ride to work.”
