ROYAL PORTHCAWL

-

A LOMBARD qualifying tournament at Royal Porthcawl was won by R James on the back of 37 Stableford points.

A birdie on hole 13 did the trick for him as did eight pars, and the victory was by a single point over Glyn Charles (11 pars with a no-return on the eighth).

Third-placed David Thursfield scored 35 points with former rugby stars Mark Wyatt and Bleddyn Taylor both carding 34 points along with Craig Davies.

Philip Gwyther shot 33 points and on the same mark came David Tucker. ris (Glynhir), Julie Bowen and Carol Rees (both Machynys) were declared the winners.

In the runners-up position came a Pyle & Kenfig trio, comprising Christine Bassett, Gaynor Lavelle and Carol Vaughan.

Third place on 77 points went to home players Claire Goldsworthy and Lyn Walters along with Caroline Naysmith (Royal Porthcawl).

Silver section prizes went to Sue Worthington (Bristol & Clifton), who was nearest the pin on hole five, and Caroline Stait (Burnham & Berrow) for longest drive down the home hole.

Bronze section events were scooped by two Southerndown members, Lyn Walters and Janet Booth, who made local knowledge count in winning nearest the pin and longest drive competitions respectively. played birdies on holes eight and nine; he also shot 13 pars and three bogeys.

Philip Derham and Chris Wills both signed for 39 points while six players were a further point back – Jason Bryant, Stephen Brown, Peter Hurn, John Flint, Mike Lethbridge and Wayne Morgan.

And on the 37-point level came Julian Harrington, Brian Howells, Anthony Hart, William Griffiths, John David, Huw Powell and Jonathan Whitten.

Meanwhile, a two on the home hole led to Mags Birch winning a GUW Medal & Golf Foundation Brooch last week with a score of 9018-72.

However, she still had to survive countback before getting the measure of Cheryl Western, who shared low gross honours with Fauve Birch on the day.

In a round of 80-8-72 she shot birdies on holes two, 14 and 18 and also collected nine pars.

Third-placed Alana Brown signed for 10128-73 and there were five pars on the card of Gaynor Lavelle, who fired 93-1776.

Elizabeth Holland, wife of club big-hitter Mike, came in with 108-31-77 while Fauve Birch rued a nine on the 16th hole.

But for that she could have easily pipped her mother at the post with a card of 80-3-77 containing birdies on holes three, seven and 17.

Seventh-placed Claire Morris got 85-7-78 (birdie on 18th), and the only two of the day came from Ceri Mohajer in 10123-78.

And 15-year-old Emilie Lewis enjoyed a productive April, triumphing at both U16 and U21 levels in the Faldo Wales Championship at her home club.

Rounds of +5, level and +3 did the trick during blustery conditions out on the Kenfig golf course.

Emilie, who is a Wales Regional Girls squad member, went on to lift the Junior Open at Ashburnham, firing a gross round of 82 that included a two-shot penalty.

Meanwhile, in a Senior Section Terns Stableford competition, the winner with 35 points was Griffith Spensley.

He entered eight pars on a winning card that even displayed a blob on the 12th hole.

Just one point in arrears were Lyndsay Evans, Paul Wilby and John Ashmore while on the 33-point mark were Graham Hugh Jenkins (birdie on hole 16), Richard Kerr and Neil Jordan, who shot an eagle two on the par-four eighth green and went birdie on the third.
