CUP FINAL CAMBRIAN & CLYDACH ....................... 5 PENYBONT .................... 1
FOR a second consecutive season Penybont had to be satisfied with the tag of losing Southern finalists, writes Tony Poole.
A year ago they went down to a 4-0 defeat against Cardiff Metropolitan University, and this time around it was a well-equipped Cambrian & Clydach team.
Staged at Penydarren Park – home of Merthyr Town – a controversial incident played its part in Bont once more losing out in a cup final.
With Cam 2-1 up midway through the second half, the Bridgend super club had a goal ruled out on a harsh off-side flag from assistant referee Paul Fisher (Port Talbot).
A goal from Matthew Symons wasn’t allowed to stand, and soon after Bont conceded a penalty that made it 3-1.
Suddenly, the game was all up for the Bridgend super club and during the closing stages, Cam piped icing on their cupwinning cake in scoring a further two goals.
After Connor Ray gave Cam the lead, dancing Danny Woolfenden equalised, and it was 1-1 during the intermission.
Ray scored again on the restart, and the disallowed Bont goal then turned the cup final on its head.
A Dave Thomas penalty in the 75th minute confirmed a Cam win, and they rounded things off with further goals from Kyle Jones and Joshua Maksimovic.
Finally, Penybont triumphed 3-1 at Merthyr Town in the Wales Over45 League thanks to an Andrew Jones goal brace and a strike from Pepe Mele.
