NATHANIEL CARS WELSH LEAGUE

DIVISION THREE

CAERAU ......................... 2 PENRHIWCEIBER RANGERS ...................... 3

IF social media is to be believed then Caerau could yet pay a heavy price for going on an early summer holiday, writes Tony Poole.

The rumour surrounds a Division Two club calling it a day – and if it’s true then three clubs would be promoted along with STM Sports and Llantwit Major.

At the start of the season, there was speculation regarding the future of a pair of Division Two clubs – Newport City (formerly Llanwern) and exWelsh League champions West End.

Whether there’s any substance in this latest gossip remains to be seen, but a dreadful run of just one win in seven games has seen the Riverboaters hit the rocks and drift down to fifth spot.

The lone win in this depressing sequence came at home to relegationthreatened Tredegar Town on April 15.

That said victories from home games with relegation-threatened Cwm Welfare (Saturday) and seven days later against promoted STM Sports might produce a thirdplace finish.

Caerau, who earned a point during the reverse fixture at the Glasbrook back in February, fell behind to a fifth-minute penalty.

Penrhiwceiber seemed more up for it with the Riverboaters unable to build up any kind of steam.

But once they did, dependable top scorer Tom Walters got a 22nd goal of the season to even things up.

Rhys Dyke then gave Caerau a brief lead with a third goal for the club only for Ceiber to repeat the dose in scoring two quickfire goals to go 3-2 up.

But during the remainder of the contest there was plenty of huff and puff on offer together with endeavour, but the scoreline remained undisturbed.

So, there might be more resting on the Cwm Welfare game on Saturday than was initially anticipated.
