TAFFS WELL ................. 1 PENYBONT .................... 3

PENYBONT eased past Taffs Well at Rhiw D’dar to make it eight successive wins, and claim runnersup spot behind promoted Barry Town United, writes Tony Poole.

The win rounded off a superb end to the campaign that saw Bont eclipse Monmouthshire side Goytre for second place behind Barry, who have accepted promotion to the Welsh Premiership.

The Bridgend super club picked up where they left off four days earlier at Goytre United in placing the Cardiff suburbanites under pressure.

Thomas Atyeo headed against the woodwork, but they had the lead after a quarter of an hour.

From another deadly Kane Owen flag kick, Kostya Georgievsky popped up at the back post to get an eighth goal for the club.

Midway through the half, Bont goalkeeper Rhys Wilson saved well from Marcus Jones - and it became 2-0 on the halfhour.

This time an Owen free kick from 25 metres flew past Anthony Burnett in the home for a third goal of the campaign.

Into the second half and Bont continue to turn the screw via Adam Carpenter, who had a shot saved low down by Burnett.

Atyeo headed just wide in the 50th minute and soon after Abdul Mohsin fouled Georgievsky in the box, and a penalty was given.

Marcus Griffiths sent Burnett the wrong way and the ex-Merthyr Town star ended the season with a healthy 22 goals.

That made it 3-0 and in the 67th minute, Marcus ing for Bont.

But a double over Bont was never a realistic prospect for the Port Talbot side situated in a dead end of town.

The writing was on the wall as early as the seventh minute when Kostya Georgievsky netted from an acute angle.

Goytre then had a sniff when the ball was farmed through to Jack Giles, who shot high, wide and certainly not handsome.

The miss proved more costly on 33 minutes when the Bridgend super club scored again.

This time Kostya Georgievsky wriggled free in the penalty area, and went on to record a magnificent seventh goal for the club.

Since being hand a debut just down the road at Griffiths headed just wide ahead of Taffs Well pulling one back.

James Parry has harshly adjudged of pushing in the box, and ex-Bryntirion Athletic star Simon Prangley converted the penalty.

Even then Bont weren’t prepared to just see out Port Talbot last month, the ex-Aberystwyth Town man has got these seven goals in just eight appearances.

On the restart, Goytre knew they had to score next, and very nearly did when captain Dale Griffiths clipped the woodwork.

But Bont continued to press and a beefy Kane Owen shot – on the end of a thoughtful Owain Warlow cross – almost put Bont out of sight.

In the 63rd minute it was the turn of Warlow to shoot over the top from an Adam Carpenter drilled pass – and Bont went on to fluff a penalty.

It arrived in the 78th minute after Josef Hopkins was felled, but goalie Luke Martin saved from top scorer Marcus Griffiths. time and during final knockings, both Josef Hopkins and Owen almost enhanced the victory margin.

The sides meet again a week tonight (Wednesday) to contest the South Wales Senior Cup final at Cambrian & Clydach.
