KEV KICKS OFF

- With Kevin Ellis

IT WAS great to see three of the four regions winning last weekend. Unfortunately Newport Gwent Dragons let a comfortable lead go in Edinburgh losing 24-20. I think that’s 19 away losses on the trot which is not a good stat. The Ospreys had a great win over Ulster but again the crowd was disappointing. It would be great to see the Ospreys back playing at the Bridgendford Brewery Field with a regular 10,000+ crowd and a great atmosphere. I’m sure the players would prefer playing in front of a full stadium. Cardiff Blues had a good home win but let Zebre back into the game and they deserved their losing bonus point. Scarlets were outstanding in the first half stuffing Connacht and scoring some great tries and move into the top four of the Pro12.

Swansea City were unlucky not to beat Manchester Utd at Old Trafford. They were the better team on the day but ended up drawing the game 1-1 and still remain in the relegation zone. Cardiff City lost at home to promoted Newcastle 2-0 and can now look to rebuild for next season.

I see New Zealand captain Kieran Read has fractured his thumb and is out for up to six weeks which could be good news for the Lions. Read got the injury playing for Canterbury Crusaders in their win on the weekend. The first test is on June 24 in Auckland so with good rehab he could add to his 97 caps and be fit to lead the All Blacks.

I see the Ospreys are assessing Alun Wyn Jones this week to see if he can return for the big Pro12 match against Scarlets this weekend. He hasn’t played since Wales’ last Six Nations game against France on March 18. Ospreys are desperate for a point to make the play-offs and I’m sure Alun Wyn wants to get game time before the Lions tour and get his match fitness up. Let’s hope he can get the goahead from medical staff. QUESTION: Do you think Swansea City will stay in the Premiership?

I really hope so but I think the pressure might get to them and Hull’s two-point advantage might be too much. I hope I’m wrong! Good luck the Swans.
