Our thanks to four town stalwarts

- Chris Smart Councillor Porthcawl West Central

WHEN the newly-elected Porthcawl Town Council met last week there were several familiar faces missing from around the table and it would be appropriate to pay tribute to them for the dedicated service they have given over many years.

Pride of place must go to David Newton-Williams, the only person to have been mayor four times. He was first elected in the mid-1980s and has served on the council during four separate decades.

David has worked tirelessly for the town he loves, has always commanded massive support at the polls and has enthusiastically supported all organisations, being seen at events throughout the resort, often along with his charming wife Gaynor.

Even now, at the age of 87, David attends events regularly and is seen around the town every day. The residents of Porthcawl owe David a sincere debt of gratitude for his unswerving commitment – thanks very much.

Then the “father” of the council, Gerald Davies, stood down after a long stint and his diligence to service cannot go unnoticed – he is a former mayor and for a long time was leader of the Liberal Democrats.

Two other stalwarts who have left the council are Alana Davies and John Bunker and they, too, deserve the thanks of our town.

While I often disagreed with them politically I had the utmost respect for their knowledge and opinions.

I for one will miss all four, all of whom I have been on the council with over the years.

I am sure that although not still councillors they will remain active within our community.
