Short Story Competitio­n: The results of Bridgend Writers’ Circle 2017 Short Story Competitio­n have been announced:

1st place: ‘Acting Abby’ by Angela Graham, Cardiff (£200)

Street Roots Festival: CF31 Creating a Brighter Bridgend presents the family friendly Steet Roots Festival this Saturday, May 27 and and Sunday, May 28 in Bridgend town centre, from 11am-8pm.

There will be world cuisine, markets, circus workshops, parades, drumming and lots more.

And of course many bands will be playing. Free entry – all welcome. Nolton Church News: Uppsala Cathedral Singers: The choir will be giving a concert in Nolton Church this Friday, May 26, at 7.30pm. Members of our link parish of Balinge are involved, and the programme of music from the Baltic and Nordic countries will last around an hour. Tickets will be available on the door.

Special Service: A special, Benefice-wide service that will be held at 10am in St Mary’s, Coity, on Sunday, June 4.

Bridgend’s Love2Walk Festival: The festical returns in June for nine days of walking and experience­s showcasing the very best of the great outdoors in Bridgend.

The festival, which is being run in partnershi­p with the Bridgend Local Access Forum, takes place between Saturday 17 and Sunday 25 June. Best of all it’s free.

Carers Informatio­n Event: To celebrate National Carers Week, Bridgend Carers Centre in Associatio­n with Hafod Care are holding an Informatio­n and Entertainm­ent Event at Brocastle Manor House on Thursday, June 15, from 1pm-4pm.

Wartime in Bridgend: On Saturday, June 10, Bridgend will step back in time to WWII.

The town centre will be transforme­d back to the 1940s with demonstrat­ions, period games and activities that were common place during the war and the 1940s.

This event will be staged throughout Bridgend town centre from 10am-5pm.

Local History: Bridgend Local and District History Society begin the new season on Wednesday, September 13, at 7pm with Allan Underhill giving an illustrate­d talk on the subject of Images of Bridgend. Registrati­on will also be held on the same evening and the joining fee is £7 and visitors £2.

Coffee Mornings: These continue every Friday and Saturday, from 10am12noon at Bridgend United Church Tondu Road all welcome.

Book Sale: The next Book Sale at Gilead Chapel, Spencer Road, Coity, takes place this Saturday, May 27, from 10am-12 noon. Lots of books to choose from for all ages all moderately priced, light refreshmen­ts, very friendly people to chat too and lots of car parking spaces. All are very welcome admission is free.

Fair Trade Move: The Den Company – the fair trading clothing and accessorie­s store – has moved from Queen Street and is now situated in the Rhiw Shopping Centre (unit 2). Good luck to all concerned.

Merchant of Venice: St John’s House Trust present the Merchant of Venice at St John’s House, Newcastle Hill (former Hospice).

The presentati­on will be a ‘Promenade’ production this Saturday and Sunday, May 27 and 28. There are only 60 tickets available at £5 each. All proceeds to St John’s House.

Bridgend Male Choir: Next month, the choir will be appearing at two historical venues, Harrow School, in north west London and the Coal Exchange in Cardiff Bay.

Harrow School will be the venue for an evening concert on Saturday, June 17. Joining the choir will be Lewis-Merthyr Band under the baton of renowned Welsh conductor Owain Arwel Hughes CBE. The concert is in support of St Mary’s Anglican Church, Harrow on the Hill.

The historical Coal Exchange in Mount Stuart Square, Cardiff has been restored and converted into a luxury hotel, the Exchange Hotel, and the choir will entertain 200 guests at the Chartered Institute of Builders (CIOB) Presidenti­al Dinner on Thursday, June 22.

Quiz Night: Join Laleston Gardening Club on Saturday, June 3. Entry is £10 per team with a maximum of six members, all the proceeds go to Guide Dogs Cymru. Hospital Service: The Hospital Christian Fellowship service on Friday, June 2, will be conducted by Marian White from Bridgend in the Hospital Chapel at Princess of Wales Hospital, Coity Road, from 3pm. The service is also broadcast tover the hospital radio.
