Charnwood Orchestra Concert: The Charnwood Orchestra is on tour in South Wales and has concerts in both Porthcawl amd Cardiff.

MV Balmoral: The MV Balmoral is back again in the Bristol Channel and will start its programmed sailings from Porthcawl on Tuesday, May 30, sailing from the harbour at 10am with a day trip to Ilfracombe and then on to Lundy, returning at 9pm.

Porthcawl Townswomen­s Guild: This month’s luncheon meeting was held at the of the groups that are appearing, The Cuddly Toys, Murphy’s Boat, Contraband, Slightly Dazed, Monkey See Monkey Do, Fair Warning Wales and lots more.

Wyndham Arms: The charity fundraisin­g fun day for Y Bont and local Bridgend Down’s Syndrome Group takes place on Saturday, June 10 with a chance to win £100.

Tuesdays at 8pm is Poker Night.

Thursdays at 9pm is Quiz Night and Play Your Cards Right where you could win £100.

Wyndham Boys & Girls Club: Stan’s Funday on Sunday, May 14, went off with a bang. What a fantastic day – we had bouncy castles lots of games and plenty to eat and drink. I would like to say a big thank you to Jolly Sailor in Newton - a special day for Dorothy Thomas, the club secretary as it was her birthday and what better way to celebrate one’s birthday than enjoying a good meal with friends!

At this month’s general meeting members were asked how they would vote on the mandate at the national AGM in Sheffield in order to give Diana Richardson, the Porthcawl delegate, some guidance. The mandate under discussion at the AGM is on Fracking Regulation­s and there will also be a debate on the possibilit­y of the abolition of the law regarding changing the clocks each year. Club President, Joyce Webb, presented chairwoman Diana with her 25 years membership badge and certificat­e. Diana has been treasurer for many years and is now chairman for a second time; co-incidental­ly Diana followed her mother Glennis James into the Guild.

The members were also thrilled to welcome back Debra John as the May speaker. Debra always dresses to suit the part and her tales of Welsh Myths kept everyone fascinated and amused. So much so that she has already been booked for next year!

The next meeting is on June 14 at 2pm at All Saints Church Hall when Rev Clive Williams will present an evening of Musical Entertainm­ent.

Poetry Evening: Tracey Rhys will be reading her poetry at Sustainabl­e all the football players, to everyone that took part, to the organisers from the Boys & Girls Club for all they done and to everyone to came and help support them from all around.

Nantymoel Boxing Club: An evening of Boxing Exhibition­s on Friday, June 16 at Sarn Social Club. Doors open at 7pm boxing starts at 8pm and you pay £8 on the door. Porthcawl Museum and Historical Society: Ceri gave the May Lecture to the usual full house and talked about Dic Penderyn the Welsh Martyr who was hung in Cardiff in 1831 for a crime he didn’t commit. The next lecture will be a dramatic talk by Debra John. Then in June there is a new exhibition on Stormy Down 1939-1945.

Porthcawl Shout: To round off the events commemorat­ing the tragic loss of the Samtampa and the Mumbles Lifeboat 70 years ago Porthcawl Shout arranged an exceptiona­l day at the Senedd in Cardiff. Schoolchil­dren and young people from West Cross School in Oystermout­h, Swansea; Nottage Primary School, Porthcawl, and from Bridgend College joined with a school from Middlesbor­ough in giving a series of high class musical and dramatic performanc­es depicting memories of the loss. The day was a major triumph for Gary Victor, the Shout Chairman and Rev Jean Humphries who both worked tirelessly to achieve this fitting tribute.

First Minister Carwyn Jones was in attendance and was extremely generous in his praise for the event as well as for the exhibition which had photo taken holding the Lonsdale Belt, IBF or Ring Magazine Legend Belts.

Adult Community learning: Adult Community learning are offering an Introducti­on to Drawing course starting in April which will be held in Nantymoel Memorial Hall.

The course will be five weeks long and involves experiment­ing with a variety of drawing materials, techniques, and processes.

Ladies' Boxfit: The Nantymoel Armature Boxing Club meets every Monday and Wednesday for a ladies’ Boxfit.

This is on the following been prepared by Shout and which has now gone on to the Maritime Museum on the waterfront in Swansea.

Future Events: Friday afternoon June 2, sees a visit from Sue Cooper, BCBC Corporate Director of Wellbeing to the Shout meeting in Trinity Church. Sue Cooper is also chair of the Western Bay Planning Group. Members and friends of Shout may well wish to hear BCBC’s plans for the future care of older people; and people in Porthcawl will also be afforded the rare opportunit­y to hear news of the developmen­ts that are intendedwh­ich will affect our town. Then on Friday, July 7 we will have our annual visit by the First Minister Carwyn Jones. All are welcome and the Q&A session is usually fairly lively. The afternoons start at 2.30pm and all are welcome.

Lions Car Boot Sale: It’s always a good sign when the Porthcawl Lions start back again with their Car Boot Sale at the Porthcawl Rugby Football Club grounds, off South Road. The Car Boot Sale will be open every Sunday until nights from 6pm-7pm with a cost of £4 each.

The club is at Bethania Row, but the entrance is at the back on High Street (opposite the Non Political Club).

Blackmill Over 50s: Blackmill Over 50s meet at The Local Community Centre on Wednesdays at 7pm, new members welcome. This is a social gathering and occasional­ly a trip to the theatre or a meal out is arranged.

Nantymoel Knitters Class: We are members of a Knitting Club who live in Nantymoel.

We meet twice a week at Dinam Close every Tuesday and Friday at 10am to noon.

As part of Lions Clubs Internatio­nal Centennial celebratio­ns, the club will be hosting an Evening with Niall Ferguson – the renowned historian, tv presenter, academic and resident of Porthcawl.

The event, at All Saint Church on June 21, promises to be an evening of topical debate in an engaging and entertaini­ng manner.

Porthcawl Flower and Musical Festival: This year the festival is on Saturday, June 17, at All Saint’s Parish Church in Victoria Avenue.

This year the theme is ‘musicals’ and as always the day will be a feast of music and floral displays, enough to gladden the heart. It starts at 10.30am and continues until early evening with musical performanc­es by local choirs and musical groups as well as flower display demonstrat­ions and an exhibition of paintings by local artist Leslie Dearne.

This really is one for your diary and I will keep you well informed about the programme nearer the date. Admission is free but donations to the Mayor’s Charity Fund will be gratefully received; so go along for an hour or for the day whichever suits you. There will be refreshmen­ts on sale and programme.
