COED-Y-MWSTWR

-

JEFFREY Pound cashed in with a two on the 11th hole to win the IEA Stableford competition last Saturday at Coed-yMwstwr.

He was also on the money in bagging 12 pars, and the victory was by two points over Stephen McAllen, who rued bad luck with a no-return on the 13th hole.

Also on 37 points came Matthew Phillips and the king of steady golf, former Lakeside captain Eddie D Taylor, and five competitors got par 36 – Steve O’Connell, Nicholas Richards, Jonny Witts, Luke Morgan and Kevin Parry.

The competition attracted 97 members and the card of 79th-placed Darren Yates highlighted the highs and lows of this deceptively simple and endlessly complicated game of ours.

Yates registered a Tutu (twos on holes eight and 17), but the lows came via seven costly blobs.

The Ladies Section contested the Gina Johnson Cup, and victory went to Julie Davies on the strength of 38 Stableford points (seven pars).

Runner-up Caroline E Tremlett was just one point in arrears (birdie on one and six pars) while third-placed Victoria Brooks had two no-re- turns on a 35-point card.

Fourth place went to Nicola Hopkins on the strength of 30 points.

Meanwhile, it was almost a case last week of last man standing winning the Senior Stableford event.

Wet conditions led to big guns like D R Stead and Dai (Maesteg) Thomas taking a rain check while four of just 21 starters gave up the uneven fight with soggy conditions.

Peter Beynon was singing in the rain after being declared winner on 39 points with Steve Clift settling for par 36.

Geoffrey Jones was third on 35 points, mad hatter Colin Edwards matched the score, with Dave Evans scoring 33 points.

Three competitors then had 32 points on their cards – Gerald Howe, Jonny McEachen and hole-in-one wizard Barrie Rowlands.

Just one two was recorded on the day, and it came from John Rogers, who sunk his birdie putt on the par-three 17th hole.
