THE main event last weekend at Pyle & Kenfig was the Roger Thomas Trophy with young Sean David storming to victory on the back of 40 Stableford points.

Birdies on holes three and 14 sent him on his way while eight pars kept a good round going.

Porthcawl Town Athletic goalkeeper Tom Booth was runner-up with 35 points (eight pars, 10 bogeys); Carl Prosser matched the score (two on 15 and birdie on nine) as did fourth-placed Jordan Oliver (birdie on the fifth).

Four players scored 34 points – Gareth Wilcox (two on six and 10 pars), Ian Howells (14 pars, four bogeys), George James (two on the sixth) and Justin Reed (birdie on hole five).

On the Ladies scene, Fauve Birch last week registered 79-3-76 to win a GUW Medal competitio­n.

The highlight was a birdie on the penultimat­e hole while she matched par 11 times and carded six bogeys.

Runner-up Claire Morris included eight pars on her card of 86-7-79.

Meanwhile, P & K are building momentum towards the staging next month of the 114th British Ladies Open.

The tournament is being held between June 13 – 17, and it adds to the rich history that the Kenfigbase­d club possesses in staging amateur championsh­ips.

The undulating course with natural hillocks, valleys and dunes makes it one of the most challengin­g links courses in the British Isles. had just one point in hand over brothers Ellis and Thomas Williams.

Third-place honours went to Stuart Hill and Norman Lloyd, who also got 41 points.

Meanwhile, Gordon Davies transferre­d ninehole form on to the big stage to win a Halletts event with 40 Stableford points – on this occasion Stephen Coates won the nine-holer.

Chris Kehoe took the weekly Wayfarers competitio­n on a countback 37 points from Mal Lewis with third-placed Mark Thomas getting par 36 points.

Former Aberavon rugby star Gary Evans tackled the nine-hole tournament, and produced a winning 17 points.

Finally, Maesteg raised the magnificen­t sum of £2,800 for a charity which is close to the heart of the Llynfi Valley club – the Motor Neurone Disease Associatio­n (MNDA).

The fund received a timely boost from club member Lee Hodgson competing in the London Marathon; a club auction and other charity-raising events.

The club recently handed over the cheque to representa­tives of MNDA.
