MATTHEW Ellis shot an eagle on the 13th hole to set up a victory last week in a Midweek Yellow Box Stableford at Southerndo­wn.

It gave him 41 points with birdies on holes eight and 15 and nine pars also lending a helping hand.

Four points back came Andy Farquarson whose card contained 11 pars, six bogeys and one doubleboge­y.

Third-placed Glenn Hughes got a two on the 10th green and birdie on six in a par haul while Grahame Harcombe signed for 35 points.

A birdie on hole two was on the 32-point card of J H Jones, and the other players to exceed 30 points were 31-point men R L Williams, Matthew Thomas (two on the 10th hole) and Michael Phillips (two on five along with birdies on eight and 13).

Division Two of the competitio­n was taken by Kenneth Vaughan on a countback 33 points from Phil Rees with Michael Pelegrotti scoring 32 points and Dave Evans 31.

Southerndo­wn Ladies staged a Sunday Medal and Club Championsh­ip qualifier that Amy Watkins won with 83-8-75.

Birdies on holes 13 and 18 did the trick, as did seven pars, with runner-up and low gross scorer Amy Rees signing for 78-2-76 (birdie on 16th hole and 11 pars).

Third-placed Janet Booth came in with 10831-77 and was followed on the scoreboard by Glamorgan County champion Helen Calvert with 84-678 and Alaitz Zubikarai on 86-4-82 (two on hole 14 and birdie on nine).

In a Stableford event, Shirley Lewis won the day on the strength of 34 points (birdies on holes two, 16 and home), finishing two points in front of Sally Bryant, who sunk a putt for two on the 14th green.

In midweek, former Bridgend No 8 Colin Standing took the latest Harold Gould tournament with 34 Stableford points.

Alan Davies was runner-up on a countback 32 points from Russell Aston while Dr Brian Dawson and Stephen Owen Thomas were a further point back.
